Williams pear, Williams BC, Bartlett pear (Eng.)
Summer pear variety that ripens early summer. The yellow fruit is popular for fresh, juice, canning and preserves as it retains its shape well. Good cross pollinators are Josephine de Malines, Beurre Hardy, Beurre Bosc and Doyenne du Comice. The variety is named after a UK nurseryman, William, that cultivated and increased the popularity of the variety, but the "Bon Chrétien" (Good Christian) part is named after Francis of Paola, a holy man who gave King Louis XI of France a pear seed from his native Calabria with instructions to plant and care for it.
