Van der Merwe prunes are purple with green to yellow flesh. Prunes are medium sized deciduous trees with beautiful white blossoms in spring and a fruit crop in summer.

Harvesting

Trees are in full bloom in Spring (end of September). Plums are harvested during mid Summer (the last weeks of January).

Remove ripe seed from the outer hull and plant in Spring after cold stratification (cold Winter or 6-10 weeks at 4-5'Celsius.)
Cuttings
Graft or bud the variety on a strong root stock, e.g. Marianna or peach seedling.

Problems

Weevil or snout beetle nibble little round holes in the leaves and can cause severe damage on fruit, especially when nibbled when young. Fruit fly is a pest on overripe fruit - remove fruit from the tree or orchard as soon as it ripens!
