Species of Aspidistra are perennial herbaceous plants growing from rhizomes. They have been used as indoor plants for many years as well as garden plants for heavily shaded areas. Some species are grown for use of their leaves in the cut flower industry. Plants are hardy and need little attention, but are slow growing.
