Blue waterlily

Nymphaea nouchali var. caerulea

Beautiful blue waterflower carried on a flowering stem above the water level. The leaves float on the survace and grows directly from the tuberous rhizome and move outwards as they age, allowing new leaves to emerge from the middle. The rhizomes are edible, but was used traditionally and no longer in favour. A long flowering season make this a good addition to sunny ponds - best to have them growing at a depth of 30-60cm.
