Palmyra Palm

Borassus flabellifer

1/3

The trunk is grey, robust and ringed with leaf scars; old leaves remain attached to the trunk for longtime before they fall off. The tree has male and female flowers on separate plants, with the male flowers growing 1 cm long and forming semi-circular clusters, which are hidden beneath scale-like bracts and the female flowers are golfball-sized and solitary. Young palmyra seedlings grow slowly, producing only a few leaves each year. The top portion of the fruit must be cut off to reveal the three sweet jelly seed sockets, that are translucent pale-white and have no pit. The jelly part of the fruit is covered with a thin, yellowish-brown skin. These are known to contain watery fluid inside the fleshy white body. Uses: Culinary. Beverages. Ornamental.
