Oakleaf Green lettuce

Lactuca sativa 'Oakleaf Green'

1/3

Oakleaf lettuce is a cool weather looseleaf crop, so make sure they are not exposed to too much sun or very hot weather. The flavour of freshly picked lettuce from the garden beats bought lettuces any day. Lettuce plants also serve as a wonderful ornamental in gardens and use different colors and leaf textures to make pretty patterns in your vegetable beds.

Harvesting

Harvest as soon as the leaves are large enough to use. Don't wait too long, as the lettuce eventually develops a bitter flavour and woody texture. Harvest older leaves first, using clean kitchen shears to cut the plants nearly to ground or pick a few leaves at a time as needed from the outside leaving the centre to regrow.

Propagation

Sow directly, 1.25 cm deep and in rows 20 -30 cm apart. Germination takes 7-14 days. Sow during Spring and Summer. Repeat every few weeks to have a continuous supply!

Problems

Lettuce rot attacks the lower leaves in contact with the soil and then spreads throughout the plant. Prevent fungal and bacterial diseases by rotating crops. Don't plant lettuce in the same bed two years in a row. Look out for slugs and snails and even birds love the crispy healthy leaves.
