Pomegranates are considered as the ‘fruits of paradise’ in ancient cultures. These small deciduous trees have glossy green leaves, orange-red flowers and large seeded fruit. Kessari has a red skin and sweet slightly tangy juice.
Kessari pomegranates ripen in Autumn. Harvest seeds by cutting the pomegranate in half, and score each half of the rind 4-6 times. Hold each half over a bowl, and smack the rind. This should cause most of the seeds to fall out.
Make 25-50 cm hardwood cuttings from one-year-old wood or suckers and plant directly or transplant after a year with bare roots.
Remove pulp and place seeds on foil or in a plastic bag to add warmth. Keep moist by placing cotton wool or wet cloth over the seed. They should germinate in 30-40 days. Repot into pots.

The plant is drought-tolerant and can be affected by root rot if they receive too much water.
