African Wonder Flower

Ornithogalum thyrsoides

Chincherinchee, Star or Bethlehem, Wonder flower

The chincherinchee is a bulbous plant found naturally from Namaqualand to the Cape Penisula to Caledon and the Agulhas Plain. This species growns in vleis, sandy flats, lower mountain slopes and in disturbed ground. It is a winter rainfall species, but it grows well in gardens in the summer rainfall region too. It is grown commercially as a cut flower. Plants of Ornithogalum thyrsoides survive the hot dry summers through dormancy.
