A genus of 8 species consisting of herbaceous, perennial flowering plants native to South Africa and north to Malawi. Popular for it's striking upright false flower spathe around a solitary finger like spadix the genus can be roughly divided into 2 groups. Hardy forms (Arum lilies) with large white spathe & Tender forms (Calla lilies) with spotted leaves and flowers in many colours which are frequently grown as houseplants in the UK.
